In my young and less mature mind, I used to think the plight of a single mother was hopeless. Then I became one and my ideas and thoughts shifted. It took awhile, but I hit my stride and came to realize that a person’s circumstances do not define them. Its just like the difference between being poor and being broke. The first describes a mindset and the latter a circumstance. So I chose to see my singleness in raising my child as a challenge to overcome and not a hopeless situation. This thought process has served me well. I have had a career as a Naval officer, I’m currently a corporate professional and an entrepreneur, and most importantly, I provide a decent home for a happy and healthy little boy that I adore. No need to pity us, we’re doing just fine.
However, I’m not superwoman. I’ve had lots of help along the way and like anyone I still need help. Single mothers come about for many difference reasons, whether that be divorce, bereavement, or unplanned parenthood. But one thing remains the same for most, we want the best for our children and could use all the help, not hand-outs, we can get. So how can you help a single mom whether she feels hopeless or thinks she’s superwoman?
Include Us – It can get pretty lonely at times when quality fellowship with other adults is lacking. Unless a single mother has a community of other single moms, it doesn’t take long to figure out that we just don’t fit in with our peers. We’re single, but don’t have the same freedom to come and go as a single person without kids. We have kids, but most other moms with kids are married and some have a lot less time to spend with single friends. Its true that it can be difficult at times to get a babysitter, but don’t stop asking us out. We like to have fun and enjoy time outside of the house more than anyone. On the flip side, making gatherings kid-friendly is also great, because a single mom will travel with kids if you invite us both!

Read What Others Are Saying…
Since 1989 we have delivered stories in TV, radio and print as an journalistic firm. In our travels we were blessed to meet Leslie Matthews, a young, intelligent, brilliant writer and professional who submitted an outstanding article for our annual publication, “Conversations the Magazine.”
Her offering, which was the best article in that edition, was well written, insightful and timely. She courageously wrote an article that dealt with single parenthood which was well constructed, smooth and kept the attention of the reader.
We were so impressed that we hired her to consult and proof other submissions.
Leslie Matthews has a gift and we expect nothing but success for her.
If you need a great writer, need to place your organization around her products and/or just desire a good read, we suggest Leslie Matthews.
You will not be disappointed.
